Finding myself and making amends via Youtube
By Alexis McGlone
My name is Alexis, and I’m on a journey.
Ever since I was young, I knew my life was different. I also knew that I needed to keep what went on at home a secret.
My father was in the military and it always seemed as though he was overseas for a war.
My mom was always a strong person. But, soon after moving to Florida, my father was deployed. My mom took it really hard, and his more than ten-year deployment led to her an addiction to alcohol, which put a huge strain on our relationship.
I know that there are others who are going through similar things who don’t have anyone to talk to or some sort of outlet where they feel safe.
I’ve decided to start a YouTube channel, FindingAlexis, as a sort of private diary. Then I thought what would happen if I made it public?
Maybe it would help people! I started getting feedback right away and realized that I made the right decision. The encouraging words kept me going and I really hope I can help people. The goal for the video blog is for me to watch myself become more confident and change my mindset in general.
I feel every time I post a vlog, I learn something about myself. I definitely didn’t think I was strong enough to do something like this out in the open.
To this day, I am still trying to make amends with my mother. But, it’s me holding back this time.
So through FindingAlexis, hopefully I can find it within myself to go for it or leave it at rest.
